warm soft winter lighting

January 19, 2010 in Inspiration

During the winter months, particularly January through March, I want to hibernate. Stay inside, sleep more, read by cozy light, and not move. One aspect of design that couldn't be more important to the mood of a room is lighting. Think about it- if your home was full of florescent lights, what would it feel like? Ick! To put it another way (and this has been years since I've experienced this), remember when you used to have the stamina and stupidity to close out a bar? They flip on all the overhead lights, and BAM! you realize how much you need to go home. Lighting can change the complete tone of a moment. To quote Holly Golightly, "there are certain shades of limelight that can wreck a girl's complexion." Exactly. I have chosen a few lamps and pendants that can create the cozy atmosphere that accompanies a favorite chair and book. They make winter seem welcome, not dreary and never-ending. Please see below:

Aspen Table Lamp, Circa Lighting,

Terri Accent Lamp, Circa Lighting, $420

winter on the beach lamp!

or if you need a color to brighten those cloudy, leafless, short days...

mad desk lamp, CB2, $69.95

pow!

and last but not least, a couple of great ceiling pendants that could be hung low next to your favorite chair for optimal light:

aria 4408 etched, schoolhouse electric, $65 shade only (fits 4" fitter)

belgian snowflake chandelier, 1stdibs.com, $3600

I hope these help brighten your apartment, or at least your day! Keep warm.
